The Spurs fans have only just stopped singing and are getting the heads around the fact that Aaron Lennon is out after injuring himself in the warm-up, when Real take the lead courtesy of a header by Emmanuel Adebayor, who easily outjumps Lennon's replacement, Jermaine JenasPhotograph: Felix Ordonez/ReutersNo wonder Adebayor's so happy, with only four minutes gone it's an ideal start for the home side. A former Gunner too. Painful for Spurs fansPhotograph: Javier Soriano/AFP/Getty ImagesJust 16 minutes in and the night goes from bad to worse for Spurs. Peter Crouch, who is already on a yellow after a rash lunge on Sergio Ramos, does it again, this time on Marcelo and the referee has no choice but to pull the red card out of his pocket this time...Photograph: Jasper Juinen/Getty Images...and Marcelo looks quite pleased with the ref's decision Photograph: Susana Vera/ReutersIt's a battle of the speedy wide men as Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo tussle for the ball Photograph: Susana Vera/ReutersThe ball's up there somewhere. Where's Peter Crouch when you need him? Oh Photograph: Fernando Alvarado/EPAThe home side are having the lion's share of the possession. Here Cristiano Ronaldo beats Luka Modric to the ballPhotograph: Javier Soriano/AFP/Getty ImagesThe second half looks to be starting like the first, some early Madrid pressure and then Emmanuel Adebayor scores with a header. Ronaldo takes a short corner to Marcelo who quickly fires in a cross into the box which catches the Spurs defence flat-footed. The Madrid forward is a bit quicker off the mark and rises high to head homePhotograph: Jasper Juinen/Getty ImagesThe old, yet experienced, legs of Ricardo Carvalho beat the young legs of Gareth Bale to deny the Spurs midfielder a chance to burst through on goalPhotograph: Andres Kudacki/APMid-way through the second half and Angel Di María makes it three, so no wonder the Spurs players are looking so dejected. Modric is caught in possession again and the ball is quickly worked out to the right where Di María is waiting, he cuts inside before lashing a fantastic shot into the top corner ...Photograph: Jasper Juinen/Getty Images... before trotting off for a celebratory slide ...Photograph: Jasper Juinen/Getty Images... and being submerged under a sea of white shirts. And rightly so, as it was a corker of a goal. It pretty much puts paid to any faint hopes that Tottenham had that they can turn this match, and the tie, aroundPhotograph: Jasper Juinen/Getty ImagesWith their team in the driving seat, the Real Madrid fans are in a celebratory moodPhotograph: Andrew Couldridge/Action ImagesEven though they're 3-0 up, Real keep up the pressure and the final whistle can't come quick enough for Spurs. But with three minutes to go Ronaldo makes it 4-0 after Kaká clips a ball to the right-hand side of the box, where Ronaldo meets it on the volley and Gomes allows it to squirt under his hands and into the net. That sort of sums up Tottenham's night Photograph: Fernando Alvarado/EPATonight's drubbing has given Harry plenty to think about before next Wednesday's return tie. Despite Mourinho's saying that the tie is 'not over', it will take a minor miracle for Spurs to progress to the semi-finalsPhotograph: Andrew Couldridge/Action ImagesThe sun's out in Milan and so are the Schalke fansPhotograph: Alex Morton/Action ImagesWhat a start to the game, there's probably plenty of fans who missed this astonishing goal by Dejan Stankovic as he scored after only 24 seconds. Not only was the time of the goal astonishing but the skill displayed by the Inter midfielder. The ball's punted towards the Schalke area but their keeper Neuer flies out the area and clears with his head. As the ball is heading towards the centre circle, he must think the danger's over but he hadn't reckoned on the right boot of Stankovic. How wrong he was, as the Serb displays fantastic technique, power and timing as to volley the ball back into the empty net. A surefire contender for goal of the seasonPhotograph: Matteo Bazzi/EPASchalke midfielder Joel Matip equalises in the 17th minute following poor marking at a corner. Julio Cesar saves well from a free header by Papadopoulos but Matip is there to smash the ball homePhotograph: Giuseppe Cacace/AFP/Getty ImagesInter retake the lead just after the half hour mark with a nicely worked goal. Sneijder crosses the ball to the back post and Cambiasso heads the ball back across the goal where Diego Milito times his run to perfection to volley home Photograph: Alessandro Garofalo/ReutersSchalke keeper Manuel Neuer beats Andrea Ranocchia to the ball and punches it away from the danger areaPhotograph: Valerio Pennicino/Getty ImagesIt's 2-2! With half-time approaching Edu is put through by Jurado and the striker's shot is saved by Cesar in the Inter goal but the Schalke forward is on hand to stick out his left leg and poke the ball home from a tight angle Photograph: Antonio Calanni/APThe outstretched fingers of Schalke's Manuel Neuer deny Samuel Eto'o Photograph: Alex Morton/Action ImagesNow it's 3-2 to Schalke, and the German side are ahead for the first time in the game and it's a wonderful goal by Raul that's done it. The veteren forward displays some of his legendary prowess when he controls the pass and swivels away from Chivu before prodding the ball into the corner from 10 yardsPhotograph: Luca Bruno/APBlimey! Just three minutes later Schalke are 4-2 ahead courtesy of Inter Milan defender Andrea Ranocchia. Jurado, in acres of space on the right, crosses low into the box, as Inter scramble back, for some reason Ranocchia slides in to gently tap the ball past CesarPhotograph: Luca Bruno/APEdu gets his second and Schalke are 5-3 ahead, unbelievable and there's still 15 minutes to go! The Brazilian picks up the ball when it's not cleared properly and then with his back to goal, controls, turns and larrups a shot into the top cornerPhotograph: Giuseppe Cacace/AFP/Getty ImagesInter's Samuel Eto'o is distraught after he skews a shot wide deep in injury timePhotograph: Alex Morton/Action ImagesIt's party time inside the San Siro for the Schalke fans. Before the match they would never have dreamed that the night would finish with their team beating the current champions 5-2 in their own backyard.
