There was good news and bad news for the Manchester City faithful when the draw for their debut Champions League season was made. Firstly, the bad news – their first away trip is to the home of the 2010 finalists Bayern Munich. The good news is that the fixture is during Munich's Oktoberfest beer festival. Prost!Photograph: Marc Mueller/EPAMeanwhile, over at the site of the old Munich-Riem airport, Manchester City representatives laid a wreath at a ceremony in memory of the victims of the 1958 Munich air disaster which claimed the lives of 23 people, including eight Manchester United players. The referee disagreesPhotograph: Kai Pfaffenbach/ReutersCity have another chance from a free-kick about 30 yards out. Yaya Toure steps up and hits a shot over the wall which forces a good save from Manuel Neuer Photograph: Sandra Montanez/Bongarts/Getty ImagesBayern's pressure pays off in the 38th minute when they take the lead courtesy of Mario Gomez. Ribery cuts in from the left and fires a low, hard shot which Joe Hart does well to parry. He excels himself when he blocks Muller's follow up shot but, unfortunately for him, the ball falls to Gomez and he lashes it into the netPhotograph: Alexander Hassenstein/Bongarts/Getty ImagesJust on the stroke of half-time, Gomez gets his and Bayern's second. Again it comes after a fantastic save by Joe Hart. Daniel van Buyten powers a header down towards the far corner which Hart does exceedingly well to get his right hand to but unfortunately his City team-mates' reactions aren't as quick. Gomez is first to the ball and chips it over Hart, making it 2-0. As the teams go off at half-time, Hart rather understandably fires a verbal rocket towards his team-mates Photograph: Alexander Hassenstein/Bongarts/Getty ImagesThis time Gomez can't beat Hart Photograph: Sandra Montanez/Bongarts/Getty ImagesA rather clumsy challenge from Edin Dzeko on Philipp Lahm ends up with both players on the deckPhotograph: Alexander Hassenstein/Bongarts/Getty ImagesThat challenge was indicitive of Dzeko's performance and he is soon replaced by Nigel De Jong. Dzeko disagreed with his manager Roberto Mancini's decision and words were exchanged. Not long afterwards, Carlos Tevez refuses to warm up or come on as a substitute. However he's already made his mind up regarding the off-field performances of Dzeko & Tevez. Fabio cuts the the ball back to Giggs who, with a deft touch, lays the ball to Danny Welbeck. The young striker scuffs his shot a tad, but there's enough on it to beat Sommer in the Basel goalPhotograph: Michael Regan/Getty ImagesJust one minute later, it's 2-0 to United courtesy of that same double act. There's a swift counter-attack from United and Giggs carries the ball towards the Basel goal. He's around 35 yards out on the left when he plays a wonderful sweeping pass towards the inside right of the box to Welbeck, and the youngster stabs the ball home first time with aplomb Photograph: Jason Cairnduff/Action ImagesJust before the hour mark, Basel's Fabian Frei gets his team back into the game when he lashes the ball home from 10 yards after a good save from David De GeaPhotograph: John Peters/Man Utd via Getty ImagesTwo minutes later, the game is turned on it's head when Alexander Frei glides a lovely header back across De Gea and into the net. It's no wonder Basel keeper Yann Sommer is overjoyed Photograph: Michael Regan/Getty ImagesFor the next 15 minutes, United are on the back foot as Basel continue to pile on the pressure and exploit United's shaky defending. This is exemplified in the 75th minute when Jones dilly-dallies on the ball rather than firing it into row Z. Possession falls to Streller, who is bundled to the ground by Antonio Valencia.
