Liverpool defeated a strong-looking Chelsea side with ease at The Academy in Kirkby this afternoon thanks to goals from Rhys Williams, Jake Cain and Liam Millar.
After Liverpool U18s had gone top of the U18 Premier League North standings by demolishing Everton U18s 0-4 at Finch Farm this morning, this was a second superb result of the day for the Reds' youth set-up as they ran out 3-1 winners.
Chelsea lined up with two senior players in their line-up in Danny Drinkwater , who won the Premier League title with Leicester City just a few seasons ago, and Baba Rahman , who was signed for a fee of £21.7 million five years ago.
Drinkwater, a £35 million signing himself, was powerless to stop Liverpool running the midfield early on through Jake Cain, who was on the bench in the Champions League clash with Ajax, and Elijah Dixon-Bonner.
Barry Lewtas' side went ahead through Rhys Williams, who made his first appearance in the Champions League under Jurgen Klopp just three days ago, as he headed home Cain's corner.
Cain then netted himself from a brilliant whipped free-kick that beat Lucas Bergstrom in the Chelsea goal at his near post. Just like Liverpool's U18s against Everton earlier, the Reds were 2-0 up within 18 minutes.
Only a couple more minutes had passed before Jack Bearne was brought down inside the penalty area. Canadian forward Liam Millar stepped up from the spot and slotted into the net.
At 3-0, and with only a quarter of the game elapsed, Liverpool were in complete control, not needing to add to their advantage in order to pick up their third league victory of the campaign to date.
Chelsea improved in the second half, knocking on the door as they attempted to find a way back into the game, but Liverpool never looked uncomfortable as they stayed strong at the back.
Bryan Fiabema did pull a goal back from the spot with around seven minutes of the 90 to play, but Liverpool's lead was enough to see them sail through to the finish line.
Liverpool U23s face Arsenal on Friday night, away from home, before then travelling to West Ham a week later.
They then visit Port Vale to play the League Two side's senior side in the final game of the EFL Trophy group stage.
