Champions League prize money confirmed

Manchester City have booked a place in the last-16 of Europe’s top club competition.

City face Sporting while neighbours Manchester United will play Atletico Madrid. Fellow Premier League sides Chelsea and Liverpool will take on Lille and Inter Milan respectively.

However well the English clubs fare in the knockout stage, they’ve already had a lucrative season in the competition so far.

English clubs have earned a combined total of €323.2m from the Champions League group stages according to football finance experts Swiss Ramble.

Manchester City top the list with €84.9m, followed by Chelsea with €80.3m, then Manchester United with €79.4m and Liverpool with £78.6m.

Another €52.7m still awaits clubs should they go on to win the tournament though.

UEFA award more prize money based on how far clubs go in the competition. Every side who reaches the round of 16 gets an additional €9.60m. Quarter finalists receive €10.60m.

Getting to the semi-final is worth another €12.50m for each club. Both finalists bag a further €15.50m, while the eventual winner gets an extra €4.50m.
