Champions League matches to be played 'every three days' in August under UEFA plan

The Champions League will be completed in August with matches played every three days, with UEFA set to announce their plans in the coming days.

European football has been brought to a halt due to the coronavirus crisis but plans across the continent are being played for completing the 2019/20 campaign during the summer months.

UEFA also intends to conclude both the Champions League and Europa League, with Sky Sports Italia now stating that a decision has been made that will affect both this season and the 2020/21 campaign.

A series of meetings have been set up this week, taking place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with it stated the matches between Lyon and Juventus and Barcelona and Napoli will be played on August 8 and 9.

The second-leg matches between Chelsea and Bayern Munich and Manchester City and Real Madrid would also take place on those dates, with the remaining matches of the competition being played every three days.

Ultimately, that would see the Champions League final take place in Istanbul on August 29, with the Europa League final in Gdansk three days earlier.

In order to accommodate this, the group stages of the 2020/21 Champions League and Europa League would not start until October 20 - a month later than the usual September start for the group stages of UEFA’s continental competitions.

If this plan is indeed laid out this week, the Premier League would then have to devise a strategy to complete the season before August as Chelsea and Manchester City could be busy that month - although the former trails 3-0 from the first leg.

Manchester United and Wolves would also be in Europa League action that month, which would leave little time in the calendar for league matches to be played.
