Here's the challenge on Silva which caused the referee to point to the spot. After some nice passing around the pitch, Silva slips into the box. He dinks and ducks his way around in front of Zoran Tosic, who is nowhere near the ball as he takes down the City player Photograph: Phil Noble/ReutersMidway through the half the game looks like it's over when Aguero gets his, and City's, second, and what a goal it is. Aguero gets the ball with his back to goal. It looks like there is nothing on whatsoever. But then he flicks the ball between his legs, spins past a defender and fires low into the far corner of the CSKA netPhotograph: Shaun Botterill/Getty ImagesNot only can Aguero score them, he can make them too. He wins the ball back on the half-way line and charges forward on the right. He passes to Alvaro Negredo who returns the pass and ambles his way into the box. Aguero continues his run down the right and squares the ball across the box. Since the CSKA defence are fast asleep, all Negredo has to do is tap it in at the back postPhotograph: Jon Super/APIn other news at the Etihad - A banner in support of Pussy Riot - the imprisoned Russian punk rock group, is removed from the stands by stewards Photograph: Dave Thompson/PAThe fireworks weren't restricted to just on the pitchPhotograph: Alex Livesey/Getty ImagesDuring the first half the home side have been a team of two halves - majestic up front and dodgy at the back, and at the end of the half they are exposed again and CSKA Moscow pull one back. Pontus Wernbloom gets the bounce of the ball as he goes past Fernandinho, before he then splits the centre of the City defence with the simplest of passes. Seydou Doumbia runs onto his good work, walks around Costel Pantilimon amd slots the ball homePhotograph: Dave Thompson/PASix minutes into the second half and City restore their three goal advantage after some good pressure and passing play. Toure picks the ball up about 40 yards out. He dinks the ball delightfully into the box where it finds the in-form Aguero. He leaps to control it and send it across the box – taking the onrushing Igor Akinfeev right out of it – to his striking partner who once again has the easiest of finishes from a few yards outPhotograph: Darren Staples/ReutersMidway through the second half Gael Clichy brings down Seydou Doumbia in the area to concede a penalty. James Milner works hard on the wing, drops a shoulder and sends a floated ball to the back post where Negredo heads home for his hat-trick. Bayern Munich's victory over Viktoria Plzen means that City are through to the final 16 for the first time in their history.
