Champions League final referee confirmed as Arsenal get familiar face

The officiating team for the Champions League final between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain has been confirmed.

Mikel Arteta's side face holders PSG in European club football's biggest fixture on May 30 in Budapest.

Arsenal have only once before made the Champions League final, when they were beaten by Barcelona in Paris 20 years ago.

The Gunners have the chance to make history by being crowned European champions for the first time and they will have a familiar face in the middle when they attempt to do so.

It has been announced that German referee Daniel Siebert will officiate the final.

His assistants will be Jan Seidel and Rafael Foltyn, with Swiss fourth official Sandro Scharer on the touchline.

The two VAR officials will be German duo Bastian Dankert and Robert Schroder.

Siebert was in charge for the second leg of Arsenal's semi-final win over Atletico Madrid.

The Gunners won that match 1-0 through Bukayo Saka's first-half strike but Atletico were furious with Siebert when he waved away their appeals for a second-half penalty following Riccardo Calafiori’s challenge on Antoine Griezmann.

"I won't focus on something simple like the Griezmann incident," Atletico boss Diego Simeone said after the match. "It's obvious, it was a foul."

Siebert also had the whistle when Arsenal faced Sporting in the quarter-finals of the Champions League earlier this season.

He was the referee for Arsenal's 1-0 first-leg win in Lisbon, enjoying a relatively stress-free night.

The German handed out only one yellow card and there was no real controversy in the match.

Over his career, Siebert has been in charge for four Arsenal matches and they have won all of those.

That includes a win over Dinamo Zagreb last season and the Europa League victory over Olympiacos in 2021.

PSG are also unbeaten when Siebert has been in the middle for their matches, winning three and drawing one of those four Champions League fixtures.
