Champions League draw: Chelsea's best and worse case scenarios as they await round of 16 fate

The Champions League round of 16 draw will take place in Nyon, Switzerland on Monday.

Chelsea know which teams they could come up against now after the group phase was completed last week.

The Blues finished top of their group ahead of Sevilla, Rennes, and FC Krasnodar and therefore are seeded for the draw, and that means they will avoid the likes of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

Furthermore, Chelsea won't be paired with the other two English clubs - Liverpool and Manchester City - left in the competition as per UEFA rules.

Below are the seven clubs Chelsea can be drawn against in the last-16.

Atletico Madrid

Borussia Monchengladbach

Porto

Atalanta

Lazio

Barcelona

RB Leipzig

And ahead of the draw, here is a look at what would be the best and worst case scenarios for Chelsea and head coach Frank Lampard.

Best case scenario

Of all the teams left in the competition, Borussia Monchengladbach are the lowest-ranked side (53) and would have qualified as group winners had they not lost to Real Madrid on matchday six.

Although, they did get out of a tough group that also included Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk, but haven't been all too convincing in their domestic league.

Their best performance came in 1977 when they finished as runners-up to Liverpool when it was known as the European Cup.

The Bundesliga outfit would represent the best-case scenario for the Blues as would a tie against FC Porto as well as Atalanta.

Interestingly, football.london simulated the round of 32 draw, and Chelsea were paired with Barcelona.

Given the Blaugrana's form this season, would that be a good or bad draw for the west London outfit?

Worst case scenario

The one team that immediately jumps out is Atletico Madrid.

Diego Simeone's side have consistently reached the latter stages of the competition in recent years, but have fallen short of being crowned champions twice.

Difficult to break down and with the likes of Diego Costa, Luiz Suarez, and Joao Felix in attack, the current La Liga leaders have what it takes to make life difficult for the Blues over two legs.

RB Leipzig would be a tricky test for Chelsea as they have knocked out both Tottenham and Manchester United in the calendar year.

Although, with Timo Werner now at Stamford Bridge he may be able to provide the secret to overcoming his former side.

Lazio can be considered dark-horses, and of course Barcelona with Lionel Messi at the peak of his powers will be a test for any team.
