Champions Cup chiefs take wait-and-see approach to deciding new final venue

Champions Cup chiefs will bide their time before deciding on the right venue for the Heineken Champions Cup final.

The Aviva Stadium could be in the mix after the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup deciders that have been rescheduled for mid-October were taken away from Marseilles.

EPCR chief Vincent Gaillard told Le Figaro that the choice will be made after the quarter-finals of both competitions, or even after the semi-finals. Guidelines on health will be the priority.

"Take the example of Leinster, ranked number one at the end of the group stage," said Gaillard.

"To say that we will play the final in Dublin if Leinster qualifies is far from certain if, during this period, we cannot go to Ireland or that we have to play behind closed doors.

"We think about the best way to approach it while remaining the most flexible and the most reactive.

"We will wait as long as possible to see how the health situation evolves."

Gaillard also said that EPCR are intent on playing the finals in front of supporters, but if the health guidelines recommend the games stay behind closed doors, that will be the case.

And he had good news for Connacht with confirmation that there will be 24 teams in the Champions Cup next season.

"The Champions Cup will be contested with 24 teams, that's for sure. But the format is not yet decided," said Gaillard.
