Champ Kelly staying with Bears, will not join Jets staff

On Tuesday night, Chicago Bears executive Champ Kelly announced he would be remaining in Chicago and will not join the Jets’ front office staff.

After being one of four candidates to interview for the Jets general manager position, Kelly was rumored to be in the running for a front office position under Joe Douglas. In Chicago, he will remain the Bears’ assistant director of player personnel.

Having worked with Douglas in Chicago, Kelly likely would’ve been his No. 2 with the Jets. Instead, Douglas hired Rex Hogan, who is highly regarded around the league, to fill that role.

Hogan will join Douglas’ front office as assistant general manager. Hogan, who was the Colts vice president of player personnel since 2017 will re-join the Jets. He was the director of college scouting from 2015-17 for the Jets before being hired by Chris Ballard in Indianapolis.

After missing out on the Jets job, which was perceived as Douglas’ to lose, Kelly will wait to throw his hat in the ring again. Other opportunities will come, even if he is passing up a potential promotion with the Jets.
