Chambers Street Edinburgh: city centre street cordoned off in ongoing bomb scare

A bomb disposal truck has been spotted outside a major Edinburgh attraction on Tuesday afternoon, with police taping off the surrounding area.

Police and the Scottish Fire and Rescue service have rushed to Chambers Street where an ongoing incident has prompted a major response, with the street closed in both directions.

One eye witness reported a large emergency service presence around 12pm on Tuesday, September 27, and shared concerns, with the bomb disposal van arriving a short time later.

Several Lothian Buses have been diverted while the incident is ongoing. A service alert on their website reads: "Due to a road closure buses are unable to serve Clerk Street, Surgeon's Hall or Chambers Street and are instead diverted via Hope Park Terrace, Buccleuch Street, Potterrow and Forrest Road northbound only until further notice."

Services 3, 30, 31, 33, 37 and many more are affected by the closure.

An image posted by nearby resident shows the whole street occupied by emergency services, with the incident reportedly occurring within the Crown Office, opposite the National Museum of Scotland.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police received a report of an unidentified package at a building on Chambers Street, Edinburgh around 10.55am on Tuesday, 27 September, 2022.

“Officers are in attendance and the building has been evacuated. Enquiries are ongoing.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 11.25am on Tuesday, 27 September to support our emergency service partners at Chambers Street, Edinburgh.”
