Chamber Made

There is only one room but there are multiple occupants in this wonderfully witty and wistful dance theatre piece from Irish company Coisceim. Turning the audience into voyeurs as if at a peepshow, and reminding us how the anonymity of the hotel room allows us to take on many identities, the show offers three entwining stories happening in a single space but in different time frames.

A young couple make love and fall out, a single man prepares for a big date, the chambermaid kisses the chocolates before she places them on the pillow; an older couple relive a tender moment. It is 50 minutes of delight that bears witness to the many lives of hotel rooms and which is performed with a thrilling athletic zest.

Both playful and sensual, the physical work's sheer precision and emotional eloquence is outstanding: at one point, the closeness of a couple and the distance between them is expressed simply with a dressing gown that makes them seem like a single animal. At another, the old couple dance stumblingly like awkward ghosts.

Coisceim means footprint, and this young company really makes its mark.
