Chalobah ready, youngsters involved: Things spotted from Chelsea training ahead of Brentford

Chelsea head into their Carabao Cup clash with Brentford on Wednesday aiming to continue their excellent cup record under Thomas Tuchel.

The German has already led the Blues to the Champions League and UEFA Super Cup titles, whilst they also booked their place in the FA Cup final last term.

Should they edge past the Bees at the Brentford Community Stadium then they will book their place in the last four of the League Cup - and will find out their opponents shortly after the game.

They of course have to be victorious against Thomas Frank’s men to do that, however.

With that being said, football.london takes a look at the Blues’ latest training session for clues as to how they will go about doing that.

Chalobah potentially fit and firing

Heading into the showdown with the Bees, there have been doubts over the fitness of Trevoh Chalobah.

The Chelsea defender started the recent draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux but had to be substituted at half-time following a heavy collision with Thiago Silva.

Despite that, the youngster was spotted taking part in training on Tuesday evening so all the signs point to him being available for selection for the clash at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Academy starlets catching the eye

Whilst Chalobah is of course a familiar sight in Chelsea training, there were a few new faces for supporters to get acquainted with.

Following a Covid-19 outbreak in the Blues’ camp, Tuchel revealed that he was forced to draft in a number of the club’s academy prospects.

He said: "They trained with us yesterday and today. We made them come for two training sessions because it's necessary.

"We have to protect our players and that's why we brought in the academy and we think about playing with them.”

The likes of Lewis Hall, Alfie Gilchrist, Charlie Webster and George McEachran were all spotted in the midst of the action so will hope they’ve done enough to earn some minutes for the Blues.

Kante involved

One decision that Tuchel has revealed about his Chelsea selection before the game is that N’Golo Kante will not be involved in the Brentford tie following his commitments against Wolves.

The German said: “Will he [Kante] be involved in the squad now against Brentford? No, simply no. Would it be possible if it was like the last game of the season? Yes, but we cannot do this and I will not do it.

“We will now give him time to recover and prepare him for the Aston Villa match [on Boxing Day].”

Despite the Frenchman not being involved tonight, that did not dampen his enthusiasm in training.

The World Cup winner was his usual committed self in preparations which certainly bodes well for the current spirit in the Chelsea camp.
