A parish council chairman who told a stand-in clerk she had "no authority here" in a Zoom meeting that went viral has resigned.
Brian Tolver and other members of Handforth Parish Council made headlines across the UK after a December meeting descended into chaos.
The 74-year-old laid into Jackie Weaver after she kicked three members out of the call, including him, resulting in tempers flaring and some now-famous outbursts.
Now, in HPC's latest full meeting on April 20, Mr Tolver announced he was quitting his role but didn't give a reason, reports CheshireLive.
He was asked if it was due to claims he had told The Economist that the council should fold in support of a proposal to merge with neighbouring Wilmslow.
Councillor John Smith said: "You mentioned an email exchange between yourself and the reporter from The Economist.
"And his actual quote was 'do you believe that Handforth Parish Council should exist' and you replied 'of course not that is what this is all about'
"So I think that is unequivocal where you stand."
Mr Tolver said he did not recall exchanging any emails and after more back and forth, Cllr Smith repeated his question.
He said: "The question was will you resign from your position as chair, as you don't want Handforth Parish Council to exist?"
Mr Tolver replied: "I intend to resign as chair but not for that reason."
When asked when that would be, the chairman said "at the end of this meeting".
Millions of people have watched the December 10 meeting.
Mr Tolver accused rival councillors of calling it illegally and said: "You have no authority here, Jackie Weaver. No authority at all."
Vice-chairman Aled Brewerton also shouted: "Read the standing orders. Read them and understand them."
