Chairman admits he'd like his striker to join Liverpool - eventually

The chairman of a lower division footballer linked with a move to Liverpool has admitted that he’d like his club’s prize asset to end up at Anfield.

Peterborough United prospect Ricky-Jade Jones has scored four goals in 11 games in his fledgling career and the striker has still yet to get off the mark in six League One outings but he has already been the subject of transfer speculation regarding both Liverpool and old foes Manchester United.

Even though the 17-year-old models his game on another home-grown hero at Old Trafford, Marcus Rashford, his club’s chief would rather he eventually join their biggest rivals.

Entrepreneur Darragh MacAnthony became the Football League’s youngest chairman when he took the reins a Peterborough aged 30 in 2006.

Despite hailing from Dublin, Mr MacAnthony is a self-confessed Liverpool fan and admits he’d love to see Jones make it with his boyhood team.

When replying to a fan’s Tweet saying “United will take him” following an article which said Manchester United and Liverpool were tracking Jones, Anfield Watch cite the Peterborough chairman as saying: “No doubt they like him. The Gaffer (Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson, son of Alex) has told his own dad about him of course.

“I’d like him to go to Liverpool eventually lol. But plenty of time for all that down the line.”
