YAMAGUCHI -- A gigantic wooden chair has been acting as a local attraction and a symbol of a district in Shunan, Yamaguchi Prefecture, since it was built in 2018.
Located on top of a small mountain in the Mitsuo district, the chair stands about 4 meters high and has a 4-square-meter seat, making it plainly visible to those who pass by on a nearby prefectural road.
Local volunteers created the plaza to provide children and the elderly with a place to relax by clearing out the former grounds of the prefectural Kumagekita High School, which had turned into a bamboo thicket.
The chair in the plaza also doubles as a watchtower of sorts.
As local children asked for an adventure zone in the plaza, a wooden swing next to the chair was set up last year.
The installation of a rope swing is being considered for the future.
