Chagos Islands injunction may be a legal first

  • A High Court judge has issued a last-minute injunction, halting Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's plan to sign a deal handing over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.
  • It came after a late legal challenge was initiated by Chagossian Bertrice Pompe, who argued the treaty would infringe upon her rights and those of other Chagossians.
  • It is believed that this may be the first time in legal history that a judge has put a pause on a treaty being signed.
  • The agreement includes a 99-year lease of the Diego Garcia military base back to the UK.
  • A new hearing is scheduled for Thursday following the initial five-hour legal session.
