The last two live action films to feature the late, great Chadwick Boseman have been chosen among the best of the best.
Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods” and the film adaptation of August Wilson’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” have been selected among the American Film Institute’s top movies of 2020.
The beloved actor, who died at age 43 in August, has been tipped as a top contender during this year’s awards season.
The films, which also include Shaka King’s powerful “Judas and the Black Messiah,” Regina King’s acclaimed “One Night in Miami” and Kemp Powers’ animated marvel “Soul,” are works the organization’s juries have determined advance the art of the moving image, enhance the cultural heritage of America’s art form, inspire audiences and artists, and make a mark on American society.
The other movies on the top 10 include “Nomadland,” “Minari,” “Mank,” “Sound of Metal” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
Among the top 10 TV honorees are the first live action “Star Wars” series, Jon Favreau’s “The Mandalorian,” Netflix’s “The Crown,” and Shonda Rhimes’ latest hit series “Bridgerton.”
In addition to the 20 honorees, AFI is giving a special award to “Hamilton,” the filmed adaptation of the Broadway juggernaut which debuted on Disney+ this summer.
Amid the COVID-19 crisis, the Los Angeles-based educational organization will hail the winners during a virtual event on Feb. 26.
