Chadwick Boseman's final film airs on Netflix tooday - everything you need to know about Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Chadwick Boseman's final film performance is to be released today.

The actor, best known for playing superhero Black Panther, tragically died following a battle with cancer in August.

Boseman, 43, had been diagnosed with colon cancer four years ago the illness publicly and films including Black Panther, Da 5 Bloods and Avengers: Endgame were all filmed 'during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy,' his family said.

His last role is in Netflix' Ma Rainey's Black Bottom which is released today, Friday December 18.

The new film, which is already tipped for Oscar glory, is based on the play of the same name by August Wilson and is set in Chicago, 1927, at a recording session.

Tensions rise between Ma Rainey, her ambitious horn player and the white management determined to control the uncontrollable "Mother of the Blues".

Boseman plays trumpet player Levee, who is in Ma Rainey's band but wants to make his own mark on the music industry.

The film, produced by Denzel Washington, Todd Black and Dany Wolf, also stars Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis who plays Ma Rainey.

According to the official synopsis: "Late to the session, the fearless, fiery Ma engages in a battle of wills with her white manager and producer over control of her music.

"As the band waits in the studio's claustrophobic rehearsal room, ambitious trumpeter Levee - who has an eye for Ma's girlfriend and is determined to stake his own claim on the music industry - spurs his fellow musicians into an eruption of stories revealing truths that will forever change the course of their lives."

The release of Black Panther in 2018, two years after Boseman was diagnosed with stage three colon cancer, was a landmark moment for representation in Hollywood.

Both the film and Boseman's portrayal of superhero T'Challa, the king of fictional African nation Wakanda, achieved universal acclaim as well as huge success at the box office.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom debuts on Netflix on Friday December 18 2020.
