Chad Kelly leaves Colts rookie minicamp without contract

The Indianapolis Colts hosted several players on a tryout basis during their rookie minicamp over the weekend, including former Denver Broncos quarterback Chad Kelly.

With the minicamp having come and gone wrapping up on Sunday, Kelly wasn’t one of the four tryout players signed to the 90-man roster. This isn’t to say a contract won’t be reached as there reportedly has been plenty of interest in the Colts’ side to sign Kelly to a contract.

The Colts currently have three quarterbacks on the roster in the form of Andrew Luck, Jacoby Brissett and Phillip Walker. They carried four quarterbacks into training camp in 2018 with the addition of Brad Kaaya, but he has since been waived.

Kelly was the final selection of the 2017 NFL Draft with the Broncos, marking him Mr. Irrelevant for that year’s class. He showed some promise and even came close to seeing a chance at grabbing the starting role in Denver but issues with the law ended with him being released.

Kelly was arrested and charged with first-degree criminal trespassing in October 2018.

While Luck proved to be back better than ever in 2018, having a solid contingency plan is always valuable to Chris Ballard. Brissett is currently that plan, but there is a high chance he walks in free agency during the 2020 offseason to find a starting gig with another team.

It isn’t clear if the Colts have enough confidence in Walker to make him the immediate backup just yet. He’s been working on the practice squad since signing with the team as an undrafted free agent following the 2017 draft.

Kelly reportedly had a solid showing at the rookie minicamp but left without a contract. A current free agent, only time will tell now if the Colts will bring him into the quarterback room this offseason.
