CFL quarterback to sign with Cardinals over Dolphins

Former Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Chris Streveler was one of a handful of players to work out for the Miami Dolphins late in January. Kicking the tires on under the radar prospects is nothing new for the Dolphins, as they’ve made a habit in 2019 of searching near and far for any potential upgrade or contributor to the roster.

But what happened next? That’s something new. The Dolphins won’t be signing Streveler — who is instead electing to sign with the Arizona Cardinals according to a report from Farhan Lalji of TSN.

Streveler was an essential contributor for Winnipeg in 2019 as the team broke through to win the CFL’s Grey Cup for the Blue Bombers’ first championship in nearly 30 years.

Now? Streveler will look to fight for the chance to serve as the backup to Kyler Murray out west in Arizona. The Dolphins’ quarterback room almost assuredly played a hand in Streveler’s decision. With Josh Rosen and Ryan Fitzpatrick primed to return and Miami’s eyes still very much set on Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in the 2020 Draft, Streveler would have faced steep competition to even warrant reps in the preseason here in Miami.

Instead, a path of least resistance to try to break through at the NFL level is a sound and smart decision for Streveler — and the Dolphins will need to kick tires elsewhere if they’re hoping to find a diamond in the rough.
