CFL linebacker Sam Eguavoen pushing for role on Dolphins defense

This is a bit of a surprise for Dolphins fans — but Raekwon McMillan has been spending a notable amount of time with the Miami Dolphins second-team defense through the first two days of Miami Dolphins training camp. Who is pushing him?

Former Canadian Football League (CFL) linebacker Sam Eguavoen, who played his college football for the Texas Tech Red Raiders from 2011 to 2014.

Who?

Eguavoen’s CFL experience is coming in useful as the Dolphins look for a second linebacker to pair in coverage with Jerome Baker — the Canadian version of the sport is wide open and requires linebackers to cover notable ground in order to be effective defenders. And so as the Dolphins introduce their sub-packages on the early days of training camp, the coaching staff is looking to add more range on the second level.

Dolphins fans everywhere shouldn’t have any issues recalling McMillan’s struggles in coverage during the early portions of last year — and it appears the Dolphins’ new coaching staff remembers it quite well, too. The silver lining for McMillan? He’s reportedly cut down to 238 pounds in an effort to find a little extra range for himself on the second level. But he’s going to have to earn the trust of the coaching staff before he’s given the reps as a sub-package defender on pass defense.

And until he does, Sam Eguavoen will look to continue to wrestle reps away from the Ohio State product in training camp.
