Former Arsenal captain and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has slammed UK prime minister Boris Johnson and the government for their lack of action amid the spread of coronavirus.
Following an emerging COBRA meeting on Thursday, Johnson warned that the situation will get worse and offered a bleak outlook for families, saying many will lose loved ones before their time.
Despite the strong words, the government stopped short of issuing action similar to what has been witnessed elsewhere in Europe, where mass gatherings have been banned and sporting events have been postponed.
Johnson stated the government were 'considering' adopting the same approach but stopped short of issuing orders to shut schools and suspend sporting events.
That attracted a strong response from Fabregas, who wrote on social media: "So, you’re saying and admitting the disease will spread so much over the next weeks/months but you’re not closing schools “just yet”
"You will have to close them eventually anyway. Why not do it now and avoid more trouble," adding the hashtag 'be responsable [sic]'.
After being questioned as to whether he listened to the science, the former midfielder added: "I listen to people being sick and dying."
Arsenal's clash with Manchester City in midweek was the first Premier League fixture to be postponed due to the spread of coronavirus but further disruption is expected.
Next week's Champions League match between City and Real Madrid has also been postponed, along with Juventus' tie against Lyon.
