Cesc Fabregas 'offers to defer entire salary for next four months' saving Monaco £2m

Cesc Fabregas has reportedly offered to defer his salary for four months to help Monaco survive the coronavirus crisis.

The Telegraph report that the offer would also see the former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder take a 30 per cent pay cut.

Monaco would be able to temporarily save around £2million while they ride the economic downturn as a result of Fabregas' generosity, £500,000 of which they would not have to pay back at all.

In a further act of kindness, the 32-year-old is willing to cover the 30 per cent deducted from all training ground staff in order to top them up to their full wage.

The Spaniard's stance puts the difficult negotiations at his former clubs into perspective.

Three of Arsenal's first-team stars have refused to agree to a 12.5 per cent pay cut, while Chelsea's players were only willing to take a 10 per cent drop as opposed to the 30 per cent suggested by the club's board.

Fabregas has been personally affected by the coronavirus outbreak, after his great-grandmother tested positive.

Flora, 95, is living in a care home, and Fabregas offered to pay for her and around 15 other residents to stay in a nearby hotel following the outbreak.

He said on Spanish TV earlier this month: "She’s 95 and the poor woman has unfortunately got coronavirus.

"There were a lot of people in her home who didn’t have it and we wanted to get them to a hotel.

"We tested them all again and 70 or 80 per cent came back positive for Covid-19, including my great-grandmother."

Meanwhile Arsenal have reopened their training ground to hold training sessions for their players.

Only five players are permitted to use the facility at any one time, and must train in isolation with strict measures in place to ensure no mixing or group sessions.

The London Colney training base had been closed since mid-March after it was confirmed that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta had contracted coronavirus.
