Cesar Azpilicueta sends message to Kepa Arrizabalaga over his Chelsea difficulties after howler

Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta has urged Kepa Arrizabalaga to have the 'character and personality' to get through his difficult period.

The goalkeeper made another big mistake on Saturday during the 3-3 draw with Southampton, missing a poor back-pass from Kurt Zouma which led to Che Adams scoring.

The 26-year-old has been under the spotlight for the past season, with some high-profile mistakes and being dropped three times by Frank Lampard.

The Blues brought in Edouard Mendy over the summer, however the Senegal international picked up an injury during the international break and was unable to play in the draw with the Saints.

Kepa was brought back in to the side but had another day to forget, and could be out of the the team for the Champions League match against Sevilla.

However, Azpilicueta has backed the world's most expensive goalkeeper to bounce back from the issues that he has been having.

"In football we have difficult times. In my position as captain, obviously I know him from a long time ago. I always try to help him," Azpilicueta said.

"Sometimes you feel like everything goes against you. You have to have the character and personality to face it. I have no doubt Kepa will work hard to reverse the situation.

"The whole squad are fighting for targets as a collective. When you are a goalkeeper it’s a completely different situation but he will keep working hard, giving his best.
