Cesar Azpilicueta out of hospital as Chelsea issue update on captain after concussion

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta has been discharged from hospital after suffering a concussion in the weekend loss to Southampton.

Azpilcueta required oxygen on the field after a nasty collision with Southampton’s Sekou Mara during the 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

The match was immediately stopped as the defender received treatment for nine minutes before being stretchered from the pitch.

Azpilicueta was sent to hospital, where he stayed until Tuesday morning before returning to the club's Cobham training base.

He took no part in training and no timeline has been given for his return.

A short statement read: "Following a concussion injury sustained during Saturday’s game against Southampton, César Azpilicueta has been discharged from hospital and is recovering well at Cobham.

"The club’s medical team are closely monitoring César’s condition, adhering to the important concussion protocols in place to ensure his safety.

"César observed training today, before he starts working towards returning to the pitch."
