Cesar Azpilicueta gives verdict on free-kick that lead to Frank Lampard and Jurgen Klopp bust-up

Cesar Azpilicueta has claimed that he felt "it was not a free-kick" that lead to Liverpool's second goal against Chelsea on Wednesday evening.

Already 1-0 down to Naby Keita's stunning goal after 23 minutes, it was to get even worse for Frank Lampard's men 15 minutes later as Andre Marriner blew for a foul outside the box after Sadio Mane went to ground.

Replays showed that Blues midfielder Mateo Kovacic clearly got the ball and Lampard was left incensed on the touchline.

The head coach was involved in a war of words with Jurgen Klopp and his bench following the decision, with Trent Alexander-Arnold converting the free-kick to double the Reds' lead.

Lampard on the comparisons between Pulisic and Hazard

With the bust-up between Lampard and Klopp dominating the headlines, Chelsea captain Azpilicueta was asked about the controversial decision after the game and he made it clear that it wasn't a foul by Kovacic.

"Who knows if it would have made a difference," he told Chelsea's official website. "Now it’s over, but when I was on the pitch I felt it was not a free-kick.

"He could have given the first one which was nearly by the touchline, which is less dangerous than it was.

"He gave it in the wrong position, but everyone can make mistakes and that one was a bit harder for us, but now is not the time to speak about it."

Chelsea have now conceded a staggering 54 goals in the Premier League this season after shipping five at Anfield.

It's a problem that Lampard needs to fix and Azpilicueta admitted that they need to do more against the better sides if they are to come away with points.

"We were not solid enough defensively against a team with so many options," added the Spaniard.

"We conceded five goals which makes it very difficult, even if in the offensive side we looked dangerous and had a couple more chances to score more goals. But when you play against the champions, you need to do more to get points."

Chelsea return to action on Sunday against Wolves before taking on Arsenal in the FA Cup final next Saturday.
