Cesar Azpilicueta decision made, Kai Havertz benched – Predicted Chelsea side vs Real Madrid

Chelsea are on the cusp of reaching their third Champions League final. In the Blues' way stand Real Madrid, who have won the competition four times in the last decade.

Thomas Tuchel's side have the smallest of advantages going into tonight's second leg. Last week in the Spanish capital, the first meeting between the two sides ended 1-1. Christian Pulisic struck a crucial away goal for Chelsea.

A goalless draw would be enough for the Blues at Stamford Bridge this evening. Yet Tuchel will not let his side approach the game with that mindset.

The German will demand his players go out to win the game, to show to the rest of Europe that Chelsea are truly back at the very top.

"For me, the challenge is to forget the result [of the first leg]," Tuchel said in his pre-match press conference yesterday."The challenge is always over two games, you play the first game and then you start at 0-0 again.

"I don’t know any other way to prepare a match than to encourage my team to go out and try to win it, to be your best.

"If we are at our best then it is a no-brainer that we go for a win, we want to win games. This club is about winning, this game is about winning, this competition is about winning."

Barring Mateo Kovacic, who is ruled out with a hamstring injury suffered three weeks ago, Tuchel has a fully fit squad to choose from. So who is the German likely to name in his starting XI?

In goal will be Edouard Mendy. The Senegal international has featured in all but one of Chelsea's Champions League games this season and has only conceded three goals. His reliability has largely gone under the radar.

The back three should contain the same central defenders that lined up in Madrid last week, namely Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger, who will be playing in a mask tonight after suffering a facial injury in the first leg.

That would mean Cesar Azpilicueta is again deployed at right wing-back. The Spaniard played the role in the first leg ahead of Reece James and performed solidly. He is likely to be up against a far fitter Eden Hazard tonight, however.

On the opposite flank is expected to be Ben Chilwell, who has very much established himself as Tuchel's go-to left wing-back.

With Kovacic ruled out, the centre midfield pairing picks itself. N'Golo Kante was brilliant in Madrid last week and will need to be so again alongside Jorginho.

Mason Mount, despite having fallen hard on his back in the win over Fulham on Saturday, will almost certainly start in the front three having trained with the rest of the first-team squad yesterday.

And the England international should be deployed alongside Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic, both of whom can cause Madrid problems with their pace if the Blues look to play on the counter.

At this point, you may have noticed that this side is exactly the same as started at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano eight days ago. If it ain't broke...

Predicted Chelsea side (3-4-2-1): Mendy; Christensen, Silva, Rudiger; Azpilicueta, Kante, Jorginho, Chilwell; Mount, Werner, Pulisic
