Cesar Azpilicueta breaks Chelsea players' silence with verdict on £47.5m Timo Werner transfer

Cesar Azpilicueta is optimistic that Timo Werner can help Chelsea launch a title bid next season.

The Blues yesterday confirmed the signing of the RB Leipzig striker, who will officially move to Stamford Bridge at the end of the Bundesliga season.

With Werner having netted 33 goals in 47 appearances in all competitions so far this season, he is an eye-catching signing for Chelsea, particularly after he was strongly linked with a move to Liverpool.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Azpilicueta feels Werner's signing shows the Blues mean business - and he wants them to be challenging the likes of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League next season.

"He’s an amazing attacking player with great experience in the Bundesliga where he has scored a lot of goals," he said.

"He has great experience in the Champions League and Germany’s squad at international level.

"He’s a big addition for our club. He can raise our level.

"As I said before, he’s an amazing player, we know we to have help him to find the best position to score goals and also to adapt to the league as quickly as possible is very important.

"Hopefully we can be competing for the top next season."

Werner is the latest signing by the Blues to be confirmed ahead of the summer, with Ajax star Hakim Ziyech also set to move to Stamford Bridge.

It looks set to be a busy summer in the transfer market for Frank Lampard following last year's transfer ban.

The likes of Kai Havertz and Said Benrahma have also been strongly linked with moves to Stamford Bridge.
