Dear Doctor, I’d love some tunes to spice up a summer barbecue. Can you help?
Why does it always seem that the sun shines when you’re at work, but the day you plan a BBQ, it rains? You ask a good question, because if we line up the right music, chances are it’ll stay hot no matter the temperature outside.
If you’re asking people to come chez toi, line up some hot Saharan tunes: Chez Moi by Ezza, an act whose hard-hitting three-piece groove on bass, guitar and drums is reminiscent of Cream. Throw on the coals and let the heat take over – take the smoking organ sounds of Brother Jack McDuff’s Hot Barbeque for starters. Then how about a little Xavier Cugat – Music To Watch Girls By, because in this barbecue the Doctor is the fire master (I’m tired of men trying to tell me how to grill. Hair tongs are not the only tongs I’m interested in, capiche?).
Ah lord, during that rant, a sausage has fallen between the grills. So throw on Connan Mockasin’s I’m The Man That Will Find You (think chilled-out Prince on acid) to keep everyone happy as you fiddle among the ashes.
Now, what’s next on the menu? After sausagegate you need to kick back. Smoke Rings by Django Reinhardt will be spot on, as always with Django. Follow that with the summer breeze sounds of Smokey Hormel’s Cheri Akimi Ngai. Tired of cooking now? Then end with an all-time barbecue classic: Raynel Wynglas and Bar-B-Q Ribs. Let’s take a taste of it:
“Hey Geraldine! What’s for dinner?”
“Nothing, I’m tired of cooking. And I’m tired of eating at home. I want to go out to eat…”
Bon appétit!
