Ceredigion pub shut down for breaching coronavirus rules

A pub in west Wales has been shut down for two weeks after it was found to have breached coronavirus regulations.

The Castle Hotel in Lampeter has been ordered to close with immediate effect after it was visited by licensing officers from Ceredigion Council who said the pub was not complying with the strict rules that premises must adhere to since they were allowed to re-open last week.

Upon visiting the premises, council officers found the pub had failed to take all reasonable measures to ensure that a distance of two metres was maintained between people inside.

The pub, located on High street in Lampeter town centre, also failed to observe the restriction that forbids the gathering of more than four people not from the same household.

In addition to the two failings, the council also said the Castle Hotel did not limit close face-to-face interaction between people, and did not maintain hygiene practices - including failing to change the layout of the pub, control the use of seating, and control and limit the use of passages, toilets and entrances.

They also did not collect valid contact information.

Ceredigion Council said that the closure of the pub was carried out to minimise the risk of exposure to Covid-19.

An authorised officer at the council said: “I, an authorised enforcement officer of Ceredigion County Council, a relevant local authority for the purposes of the aforementioned legislation, consider that the closure of the above-named premises is necessary and proportionate for the purpose of minimising the risk of exposure to coronavirus.”

The pub’s closure notice came into effect on Monday and will remain in place until 10am on Monday, November 30.
