CEO of Bristol Rovers rivals Portsmouth shoots down calls for Premier League to save EFL clubs

The CEO of Portsmouth has shot down calls for the Premier League to step in and save EFL clubs during the coronavirus shutdown.

A huge number of EFL clubs have admitted they face financial difficulties due to having to pay players without any matches until May at the very earliest.

Bristol Rovers have assured fans that the club will be okay thanks to backing from the Al Qadi family, whilst Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has proposed a solution that would see the Premier League and Sky Sports effectively loan the EFL solidarity payments in advance.

Yet speaking to talkSPORT, Mark Catlin, CEO of the Gas' League One rivals Portsmouth, played down the idea of the Premier League needing to do more to save any EFL club.

He said: "The Premier League do a lot already in regards of the money that filters down through the leagues and in regards to the money that filters through into our academies.

"So listen, at this time, they've got their own businesses to run and it's for each individual EFL club to manage their own resources accordingly.

"I know this is an extraordinary event but we can't just rely on handouts from the Premier League.

"Ultimately we've got to look at ourselves and say, one, how are we going to get out of it? And two, when we come out of it, how are we going to run our clubs so that, if an event such as this happens again, we're not all in trouble in the first few weeks of the crisis?

"The Premier League do a lot, great, and I'm sure they're doing a lot behind the scenes to help anyway, but they genuinely don't have this magical pot of money that they can just go and help clubs out.

"I'm hearing a lot of stories of clubs individually going and helping out where they can in regards to loans and deferring payments, and that's great - that's the Premier League, they're really good at that.

"At some point, the Premier League have to look after their interests and their businesses but the EFL have to look after ourselves as well."
