Centre Advises ZEE5 to Halt Release of ‘Lawrence of Punjab’ Amid Law & Order Concerns

Government Advisory and Legal Developments

According to reports, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued a formal communication to ZEE5, urging the platform to refrain from releasing the series. The advisory came after inputs from the Punjab Police, which flagged the content as potentially sensitive and capable of disturbing law and order. The development follows a petition filed by Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, seeking a ban on the show. In his plea, Warring argued that the series glorifies gangster culture and could negatively influence the youth.

During the hearing, representatives of the Centre submitted the ministry’s advisory before the court. Subsequently, the petitioner’s counsel stated that their concerns had been addressed, leading to the disposal of the petition.

Concerns Raised by Authorities

In its communication, the Ministry highlighted the risks associated with releasing content centered on organized crime, especially in a region already grappling with such issues.

Officials noted that the series could:

Trigger strong public reactions

Escalate tensions in the state

Undermine ongoing law enforcement efforts

Influence young audiences by romanticizing criminal lifestyles

The advisory specifically cautioned against content that may “normalize or glorify organized crime,” emphasizing its potential to disrupt public order.

About the Docu-Series

Lawrence of Punjab draws its title from the classic film Lawrence of Arabia and attempts to chronicle the transformation of Lawrence Bishnoi from a student leader to a notorious gangster currently lodged in Sabarmati jail. The series also touches upon his alleged involvement in high-profile criminal activities, including threats linked to Bollywood actor Salman Khan in connection with the 1990s blackbuck poaching case. According to the creators, the show aims to explore the making of a criminal identity through factors such as student politics, cultural influences, media amplification, and systemic dynamics.

What Lies Ahead

While the government has not imposed an outright ban, the advisory effectively acts as a roadblock for the release. ZEE5 has been asked to “take appropriate action,” leaving the future of the series uncertain. The episode highlights the ongoing debate around creative freedom versus societal responsibility, especially when dealing with real-life figures tied to crime and controversy.
