Central Michigan (5-4) vs. Northern Illinois (3-5) Game Preview
What’s Going To Happen
It’s becoming an all-or-nothing moment for Northern Illinois. The defending MAC champ is still in the MAC title hunt, but it has to win out and get a wee bit of help from a Ball State loss. It also has to win out to be assured of a bowl slot. 6-6 gets NIU bowl eligible, but it’s going to be a crowded field. 7-5, locks in a spot.
Central Michigan is right there for both things, too, but has a huge hump to get over. Just when it seemed like it was going to take control of the MAC West, it got whacked by Buffalo last week. It just needs one more win to become bowl eligible, but it has a trip to Ball State and Toledo to follow – neither game is a sure thing.
NIU’s offense has been hit-of-miss, but it takes care of the clock, doesn’t give the ball away, and relies on the defense to get the job done. The secondary has been terrific, but Central Michigan can move the ball in a variety of ways.
At home, the Chippewas get the job done with a D that gets into the backfield and stops the middling NIU running game before it can get going.
