Central line commuters were facing nightmare delays on their journey home on Thursday evening.

There were severe delays across the line, which runs from west London to Essex, because of a faulty track at Holborn station.

Transport for London (TfL) said: "We're now running with severe delays across the entire line.

"This is due to a faulty track at Holborn. Engineers are fixing the fault. We'll continue to update you all."

The delays caused huge disruption at central London stations, with one picture posted on Twitter showing a packed concourse at Bond Street.

TfL also warned of crowding at Oxford Circus. It said: "Please be aware the station currently has crowd control measures in place.

"Entry may be slow into the station. If you can - please use a nearby station to complete your journey."
