The central and Tokyo metropolitan governments are planning to split equally the more than 90 billion yen expenses for novel coronavirus measures for the postponed Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, according to sources involved in preparations for the Games.
The central and metropolitan governments and the Games' organizing committee are set to discuss the issue soon, as well as ways to divide the additional 200 billion yen costs caused by the postponement.
According to the sources, the governments and the organizing committee estimate the cost of virus measures to exceed 90 billion yen, which includes expenses for testing athletes from Japan and abroad and securing medical personnel.
The central government is likely to cover the expenses for border control measures, including costs to conduct virus tests for athletes and others when they enter the country.
In December last year, the organizing committee announced that the event would cost a total of 1.35 trillion yen. It was agreed that the organizing committee would shoulder 603 billion yen, the Tokyo metropolitan government 597 billion yen and the central government 150 billion yen.
