Central Coast Hydrogen developer wins global energy award

Central Coast technology company Star Scientific has taken out the Sustainable Energy Council's inaugural World Hydrogen Awards' industrial application category for its Hydrogen Energy Release Optimiser (HERO)

HERO is a unique catalyst that can allow hydrogen to achieve its full potential as a sustainable energy source.

"This is an exciting time to be pioneering hydrogen technology. We are seeing a shift toward hydrogen as the energy choice of the future and we are very excited by the opportunities that HERO® will bring," Star Scientific's global group chairman Andrew Horvath said.

"All round the world we are seeing governments starting to grapple with the hard question of how to adapt fossil-fuel driven industries to sustainable energy; specifically, how to help industry generate industrial quantities of heat without combustion.

The company signed a memorandum of understanding with the Philippines' department of energy in January to assist in the development of the country's hydrogen economy.

Early attention is being focused on retro-fitting existing coal-fired power stations to allow them to be fuelled by green hydrogen.

"Heat is the key input into most human endeavours. HERO® is the missing link in the hydrogen supply chain, turning green hydrogen into continuous industrial heat without combustion. It can be used from the heaviest of industry such as coal-fired power stations, through to scaled down local assets for specific locations such as district heating and desalination."

The company is presently scouting locations on the Central Coast and in the Upper Hunter for a future manufacturing plant.
