Centra beef products with incorrect labels removed from shelves

Beef that was incorrectly labelled has been removed from Irish shelves.

Bord Bia told RTE News that a Centra Fresh Beef product carried the labels "slaughtered in the United Kingdom" and "slaughtered in Ireland".

It formally raised the "erroneous label" with the plant that processed the products and now a probe has been launched, with an audit of the facility due to start.

The issue is being blamed on a "printing error" which happened "for a short period during the labelling process".

Bord Bia said the beef in the products was 100% Irish beef and met all its requirements.

Linden Foods said the Centra Lean Diced Beef 410g, with a use by date of September 18 2019, was temporarily being packed in an approved factory in Northern Ireland.

The firm told RTE that some 336 packets were found to have been put together with incorrect labels due to human error and now corrective action has been put in place.

Centra also told RTE that it had been made aware by the processor that some of a batch of diced beef had been labelled incorrectly and it has removed these products from its shelves.
