Census will create 43,000 jobs — In the week 11/10/10

Design challenge: Energy company EDF Energy has launched a design challenge which will allow students of engineering, design, business and architecture a chance to see their projects showcased at the Olympic Park during the 2012 Olympic Games. Participants in the EDF Sustainable Design Challenge will be asked to come up with designs which could help people use energy more efficiently on a daily basis. Census jobs: A recruitment campaign has been launched to find 43,000 temporary workers to work on the 2011 census across the UK, according to the BBC. The full and part-time posts include roles as census collectors, who will provide help and support on the doorstep, and census coordinators, who will help to manage local teams. There will also be special enumerators, who will be responsible for communal establishments including care homes, hotels and student halls of residence.

Meet TV experts: Nearly 100 television and film executives will be sharing their insight at a broadcasting industry networking event. Black and minority ethnic professionals in TV and film are being invited to apply for a place at the Move on Up TV and Film event on 13 December, at TUC Congress House in London. For those taking part there is the chance to have one-to-one meetings with industry executives as well as a number of workshops on offer. Find out more here.

Distribution: Online supermarket Ocado is to create up to 2,000 jobs with a new distribution centre, according to the Guardian. The new centre near Tamworth, in the Midlands, will be operational by the end of 2012. The types of jobs which will be on offer include delivery staff, personal shopper positions, software developer roles, team leaders and HGV drivers.

Construction: A major council house building programme has created more than 750 jobs across East Yorkshire. The BBC reported how East Riding of Yorkshire Council is building 331 new affordable homes using the services of local contractors. The £46 million programme will also create jobs for 16 new apprentices in the construction industry.

Supermarket: Tesco is creating 16,000 jobs across the 14 countries it operates in, according to Recruiter. A spokesman for the company told the magazine 9,000 of these jobs will be in the UK, through new openings in stores, call centres, distribution centres and Tesco Bank.
