Celtics’ Tremont Waters wins G League Player of the Week 2nd time

Rookie Boston Celtics two way point guard Tremont Waters was named the NBA G League Player of the Week Monday for the second time this season.

Averaging 23.5 points, 10.5 assists and 3 steals over three games last week, the LSU product continued to dominate the developmental league. His strong play has garnered the attention of several rival general managers already this season, and last week is just one small sample of why.

He’s shown ability both as a distributor, handing out 14 assists against the Detroit Pistons G League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Drive on Jan. 11, and also as a scorer, hanging 30 on the Capital City Go-Gos — the affiliate of the Washington Wizards — on Jan. 9.

Waters has also won the league’s Player of the Month honors for November.

He has also had a number of impactful games with the Celtics when called on to reinforce the parent club’s roster, with illness removing starting point guard Kemba Walker and reserve guard Marcus Smart for stretches of December.

The shorter-statured floor general continues to surprise despite erroneous assumptions his 5-foot-10 frame was too small to succeed in the NBA, giving the team an excellent prospect for the future of its backcourt.
