Celtics’ Tremont Waters among ‘3 G League players to keep an eye on’

Boston Celtics two way point guard Tremont Waters is among the G League prospects we ought to be most keeping an eye on, according to the Playgounder’s Matt Esposito.

And after his inaugural season in the NBA’s developmental league with the Celtics G League affiliate the Maine Red Claws, it’s not hard to understand why.

The Connecticut native scored 18 points, 3.2 rebounds and 7.3 assists per game with the Red Claws while shooting 35.4 % from 3-point range on 7.1 attempts per game.

But even his basic stats don’t tell the full story of what makes the LSU product such an effective player despite being considerably smaller than most NBA point guards at 5-foot-10.

Esposito chalks it up to Waters’ handle and ability to think on the fly with superior vision to run an offense, while quick, mobile feet and active hands and basketball IQ help him defend above his size.

“Offensively, Waters’ yo-yo type handle pairs perfectly with his elite vision,” he explains. “After he weaves his way through defenders, teammates are often wowed with imaginative passes. His ability to see one play ahead cannot be overstated and the execution is right on par with the game’s best facilitators.”

Esposito rightly notes that Waters may well contend for a regular roster spot by the 2020-21 NBA season, perhaps even putting pressure on this season’s rookies in the process.

For the Celtics’ part at least, that’s an enviable ‘problem’ to have from a player taken near the end of the second round.
