Celtics’ Stevens reveals why he had Pats’ Bill Belichick speak to team

Bill Belichick, the famed head coach of the New England Patriots, spoke to the Boston Celtics Sunday morning, and at least some of the press corp talking to Celtics head coach Brad Stevens ahead of today’s game with the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the 2020 East NBA Playoffs.

For the uninitiated, the question was likely meant to delve into the intricacies of two great strategic minds in Stevens and Belichick — the latter owner of 6 Super Bowl wins with New England — but fell a bit flat in that regard in the simplicity of the answer.

“Well,” he began, “I won’t go too far into it because I want to respect him and want to respect all that he had to say to us, but I think that he is one of the best coaches in any sport of all time and probably renowned as the best preparer of all time.”

“And I think that that is something that we thought was really important as we head into this time of the year. We’re trying our best to keep this fresh and also we’ve got a lot of time on our hands on those off days, and it’s so nice to be able to take some time out of his preseason schedule and speak to our team.”

All-time winner? Check. Fellow New England Sports icon? Also check.

Free that afternoon? Make it three for three, evidently.

Sometimes, it’s the simple answers that are the truest, and if a six-time champion can’t give you some useful advice on how to win, or at least prepare to win, we’re not sure there’s much hope for you anyway.
