Celtics send Carsen Edwards, Vincent Poirier to play with Red Claws

The Boston Celtics have sent rookie guard Carsen Edwards and first-year center Vincent Poirier to Portland to play with the Maine Red Claws, according to the team.

The duo will join Boston’s two way players Tacko Fall and Tremont Waters as the Celtics’ G League affiliate take on the Grand Rapids Drive — the developmental affiliate of the Detroit Pistons — at the Portland Expo Center Friday evening.

Boston is likely hoping the additional reps with the Claws will help warm up the duo as bench contributors as the team begins to truly dive into the stretch run and race for the second seed in the East.

It seems unlikely either is in danger of being cut despite some fans and analysts continuing to clamor for an end-of-bench contract to be cut in favor of some new blood to improve the Celtics’ terrible bench scoring.

Edwards in particular has shown flashes of being the sort of bench scorer Boston needs to make a deep run in the postseason, but has lacked the same swagger and efficiency seen in Summer League and G League assignments to date.
