Celtics release official training camp roster for 2019-20

There has been plenty of confusion surrounding the Boston Celtics’ training camp signings, as the recently reported deals would have brought the team’s roster count up to 22, well past the 15-player limit for regular season rosters and even over the 20-player limit for training camp rosters.

However, the Celtics have released their official training camp roster (h/t Boston.com’s Nicole Yang) and there’s now clarity about which players Boston signed.

In short, after guard Javonte Green was signed to a partially-guaranteed two-year deal, forwards Kaiser Gates and Yante Maten — reputable G League players — signed training camp deals with the Celtics.

Rookie guard Bryce Brown and center John Bohannan, whose signings were reported last week, will join Boston’s official G League affiliate: the Maine Red Claws. Bohannan played for the Red Claws last season.

That means that the training camp competition for the Celtics’ final roster spot comes down to Green, Gates, Maten and rookie center Tacko Fall.

Fall is the prohibitive favorite to make the final cut due to his relationship with the team’s rookies and Boston being enamored with his 7-foot-7, 310-pound frame. However, the competition will be closer than considered by many, with the Celtics needing more depth at forward then center and each of the players he’s competing with being more refined as prospects than he is.
