Celtics release image of jersey patch honoring late John Havlicek

On Friday, it was reported that the Boston Celtics planned to wear a jersey patch in honor of late Celtics legend John Havlicek, who passed away on Thursday after a battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Havlicek, who retired ranked third on the NBA’s career points list, is the Celtics’ all-time leader in points (26,395) and games played (1,270).

On the eve of their Eastern Conference semifinals matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks, Boston released the image of the jersey patch, which had been described as the number 17 (Havlicek’s jersey number) with a black stripe. This jersey patch design sees a white number 17 placed on a long strip of black material.

The color black is likely used to symbolize the passing of Havlicek and the team’s mourning of his loss. The official ribbon awareness color for Parkinson’s is silver or gray, with red or yellow tulips having also been used to symbolize Parkinson’s disease.
