Celtics officially sign Greg Monroe to 10-day contract

Just two days after The Athletic and Stadium’s Shams Charania reported that center Greg Monroe had agreed to sign a 10-day contract with Boston Celtics, the Celtics announced that they officially signed Monroe on Sunday. A center with playmaking ability that and experience playing a role similar to Horford’s on offense, Boston signed the nine-year veteran to a contract last February.

After filling up the box with 10.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.7 blocks in just 19.1 minutes per game with Boston in the regular season, Monroe played a lesser role in the postseason, averaging just 9.5 minutes per game.

That likely contributed to the Celtics’ decision not to re-sign him in the offseason, as well as their decision to only sign him to a 10-day contract this season.

Nonetheless, with centers Aron Baynes and Robert Williams experiencing injuries and Al Horford scheduled to miss at least one more game to rest, Boston needs to shore up their center depth in the short-term and Monroe is a solid option. He averaged 4.8 points and 4.1 rebounds in 11.1 minutes per game for the Toronto Raptors this season, playing 38 games for the Kawhi Leonard-led ball club.
