Celtics’ Jayson Tatum becoming increasingly comfortable as a leader

The Boston Celtics have not yet named a captain for this season, head coach Ime Udoka told reporters Sunday. Udoka said that it is more likely to be a leader-by-committee-type situation.

“I think it is by committee, we haven’t named any captains yet but the guys that have been here, we want them all to lead by example as well as be vocal and grow in that area,” Udoka said. “So, I talked about that with Jaylen [Brown] and Jayson [Tatum] before taking another step in their progression as players who have been here and some of the main guys on the team to be more vocal.”

Udoka highlighted Al Horford and Marcus Smart for their leadership as well. He also said he wants to help the younger guys improve in that area too.

Tatum outlined his personal style as a bit more lead-by-example-type, which he has said in the past. Tatum said he is not incredibly animated in front of the camera, but behind the scenes speaks up when necessary.

“I show up to work every day. I put in extra work every day. And earn my teammates trust and respect and my coaches by showing up in and buying in every day,” Tatum said. “I speak up in the huddles, and the meetings, I pull guys to the side and I make sure that I’m held accountable. Anybody from the head coach to two-way guys, if they see something that I should be doing that they can come up and talk to me, and vice versa.”

Tatum said he leads in his own way and he’s gotten more comfortable in a leadership role over time. At just 23-years-old, Tatum has heaps of time to continue to develop as a leader.
