Celtics formally announce Jayson Tatum’s rookie extension

The Boston Celtics formally announced the signing of All-NBA forward Jayson Tatum’s $195 million contract extension with a press release Wednesday.

While the team did not disclose the terms of the deal, Woj shared details about the contract earlier this week, which has a player option in the fifth and final year of the deal, set to begin after next season.

“Jayson has emerged as one of the best two-way players in the NBA through his first three seasons, and will continue to get better and better as a player and a leader,” shared team president Danny Ainge in the release.

“He possesses unique scoring and playmaking abilities, and has displayed exceptional poise and maturity in how he approaches the game. He’s someone who, at 22 years of age, will be a central figure to this organization’s championship aspirations for many years to come.”

The Duke product shared a prepared statement in the release as well.

“I am incredibly grateful to the Celtics organization, and the city of Boston for this opportunity,” shared Tatum. “I love this city, this organization, and the best fans in the NBA. I plan on being here for a very long time.”

The first Celtic to register 23 points and 7 rebounds per game in a single season since Paul Pierce in 2003, Tatum made his first All-Star team and got his first All-NBA nod in just his third season in the league.

The latter honor has only been achieved by one other Celtic before their 23rd birthday, leaving little wonder why Boston did not press the issue on the player option on Tatum’s fifth year.

With a player that good on your roster, finding the rest of the puzzle is a breeze in comparison.
