He’s been a fixture with the Boston Celtics nearly as long as there has been a Boston Celtics, and certainly a Celtics team worth paying attention to, but we won’t be seeing legendary Boston big man Tommy Heinsohn for a while.
Of course in the middle of a pandemic, many of us aren’t seeing anyone — at least in person — for a while, especially the older among us, as is Heinsohn, who at 85 ought to be laying low like his former teammate and friend Bob Cousy has been in recent months.
Heinsohn is reportedly on the mend from and getting treatment for blood clotting issues according to the Boston Globe’s Chad Finn, the eight-time Celtics champion spending some time at a facility in the Woburn, Massachusetts area to heal up.
For those concerned it might be COVID-19-related, Finn relates it is not connected to the viral disease behind the pandemic.
With the resumed season set to restart at the Disney-hosted ‘bubble’ that is the NBA campus at Lake Buena Vista, Florida at the end of the month as inter-team scrimmage exhibitions as soon as this Friday, neither Heinsohn nor longtime Celtics play-by-play announcer Mike Gorman will be present.
There had been plans to have the team work the games remotely, but Gorman may need to recruit Brian Scalabrine to fill in for Tommy while the Celtics legend heals up.
