Celtics alumni Paul Pierce, Chauncey Billups to play in HORSE tourney

Boston Celtics luminary Paul Pierce will participate in the NBA’s televised H-O-R-S-E competition, reports Boston.com’s Nicole Yang.

He will be joined by Boston alumni and NBA analyst Chauncey Billups, recent Naismith Hall of Fame inductee Tamika Catchings, Utah Jazz point guard Mike Conley, Chicago Bulls’ Zach LaVine, Oklahoma City Thunder’s Chris Paul, the Chicago Sky’s Allie Quigley, and Atlanta Hawks’ Trae Young.

The tournament, which will be broadcast from each player’s location in order to maintain maximum safety in light of the coronavirus pandemic, will be a single-elimination tourney featuring two groups, according to Yang.

Using the classic rules of the popular playground basketball game, players unable to match the opponent’s shot on their turn will receive letters until they can spell “HORSE”, at which point they will be eliminated.

Order will be determined by a coin flip, the more senior player calling it.

Pierce will face Lavine in the first round, followed by the winner of Paul vs. Quigley, and the contest will be broadcast on ESPN starting Sunday.
